This article is full of contradictions.
When Apple was beleaguered, all the fans cried that the media were unfair to Apple. Now it’s successful, and its enemies say the media are propping it up. But I don’t see it. When the ipod came out, there were innumerable articles predicting its demise in the face of more open systems: “It’ll lose just like the mac did”, they wrote over and over. Same thing when the iphone came out. And the press have never stopped writing about how Apple products are overpriced, even though direct comparisons often contradict them. Apple has plenty of naysayers in the press, including Dvorak, you, and plenty of others. If you feel ignored, maybe there’s a reason: people like what they buy from Apple.
What would be a reason for a media conspiracy either for or against Apple? The media is a business, and they write what people want to read. In the final analysis, it’s what a company does that determines its treatment by the press, and Apple has been getting things right lately. If it’s so easy – set prices too high, be secretive, seduce reporters – how is it so many tech companies fail? You of all people should be able to make billions acting just like Jobs, winning over the gullible media hacks, and selling snake oil to the public.
You complain about the hero worship of Jobs in one breath, and then worship him yourself by demanding his daily stool samples, because he is the hero of Apple.
You claim his illness is obvious to anyone with a pulse, and then complain that investors are being swindled because they don’t know that he’s sick. Jobs brush with death is well known; anyone who invests in Apple (including me) does it with open eyes. To my mind, investors have no more right to more detailed information about his prospects (if they are even known to anyone) than we have to detailed information about their future product plans (which also affect the stock prospects).
You blame the media for phony Apple press, and then write the phoniest Palm Pre review imaginable.
I think you just get far too invested in one technological ideology or another, and lose all contact with reality. The Ann Coulter of technology.
Dan, I’m not a big fan of these statements you’re making saying that the media is “covering up” his health issues. If anything, they’re getting into his personal business more than they need to. I’m really sick of these media types (which includes you) who just won’t leave it alone. How would you like it if everybody hung onto every word you said and you just wanted privacy?
Dan, how does it feel to know you have sold yourself out to Newsweek when it comes to blogging? The only time you post to this page anymore is to pimp articles you have written for your employer’s website. While your articles may be witty (at times) and more often than not correct in their arguments, you really owe it to yourself and your readers to rename this page’s navigation tab something other than “blog.”

Or maybe we do, since anyone with half a brain doesn’t bother reading Newsweek. I would much prefer it if you treated this blog as an actual blog. You know, write shit in it.
Overall I appreciate your views on most things relating to the technology industry. However I think you’re still trying to make a buck off of Steve Jobs’ name. First it was witty. Now you’re just coming off as rather lame. You’re saying the same thing over and over again, you’re coming off just like all the hacks you talk about. “Apple is deceptive and the media eats it up” We got that the first time.
I think apple needs some decent critics… not windows fans (if there are any left) or apple fans fawning over steve, but someone who can genuinely spot and write about the faults.
And if steve was your average employee his health would be his business. But he’s not, he is apple, he runs is single handedly, and while apple will be ok in the very short term without him, in the longer term it’ll be screwed and directionless so it is investor’s business.
This Newsweek piece mentions Google AND Apple in one go! Oh, and I’m not guilty. Pleading insanity.
“Google is an avalanche and it has only just begun to tumble down the mountain,” Jeff Jarvis writes in a new book called “What Would Google Do?” that advises pretty much everyone—you, your company, entire industries, and the U.S. government—to study and ape the online juggernaut, or risk getting buried. Jarvis writes like he changes jobs, which is to say rapidly. He has been a TV critic, magazine founder, blogger, investor and professor, and if “WWGD” occasionally goes into sound-bite overdrive (the phrase “small is the new big” is used more than a dozen times, among other abuses), the habit can be excused as the tic of a guy who’s got a lot to say about the future of technology. He spoke with NEWSWEEK’s Nick Summers from Munich, where he is attending a conference in advance of the 2009 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Excerpts:
NEWSWEEK: Besides Google, it seems like you have crushes on Facebook and Amazon, too. Did you ever think about writing on WWFD or WWAD, or might you in the future?
Jeff Jarvis: [Laughs] I think that’s already in this book. Because the point isn’t so much to worship Google, it is to face the confusing, counterintuitive, fundamental change going on in our world now and ask, “Who is succeeding in it, and why?” So, just as I try to look admiringly from a distance at Google, I include anecdotes and examples from Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook and Craig Newmark at craigslist and Jeff Bezos at Amazon. There is a club of people who’ve figured out the Internet and succeeded at it. You can pick your own. I just think Google is the most appropriate lens, because it’s gigantic; indeed the Times of London said that it’s the fastest growing company in the history of the world, so who better to use as a lens to this new worldview?
So, what are the ways in which you’ve used Google in the last 24 hours?
Oh, can I count them all? My mail is on Google, so every time I’ve pinged it, I’m on Google. I’ve searched for news of various sorts; I used Google Maps to find restaurants in Munich, I used Google Maps to get directions; I used Google search to find movie listings, and then I used it to find reviews. I watched a mess of Google videos.
That’s a lot!
I’m probably not even done. On my blog, I have Google ads there, so I made some pennies. Tonight I’m going to take a Flip video of this great event last night [a beatbox-violin duet] and put that on YouTube. I’m trying to think of all the tentacles that Google reaches out—I’ve probably used it in ways I don’t even know.
Printed books are about the least Google-y medium around. How did you apply the “What Would Google Do?” concept to this title?
First, I’ll confess, I’m a hypocrite. I didn’t put this book up as a purely digital, searchable, linkable entity—I didn’t eat my own dog food—because I got an advance from the publisher, and other services. Dog’s gotta eat. I couldn’t pass it up. In terms of the process of the book, though, I hope it was Googlier [than most] in that I thought this book through on my blog. And the great thing about the blog is the people who help me there—readers who with amazing generosity will act as peer review and challenge my ideas, and push them and fill in gaps in my knowledge.
Are there any areas in which Google itself doesn’t act very “Google-y?” Not disclosing its advertising revenue splits, for example.
Right. There are areas where Google doesn’t act very Google-y, which are mainly about transparency. It can’t be transparent about its algorithms and how they operate, because then they will get gamed more. And those are special sauce. I wish Google were more open about its advertising arrangements and splits, so we had a better sense of the value of the market; I wish it were more open about the sources that it puts into Google News.
I wish it understood the power that it could have to support free speech against regimes in countries like China and Iran. The argument that is made by Google and its defenders on that point is that it is better for the Chinese to have a hampered Internet than no Internet at all. I think that underestimates Google’s own power and strength. If suddenly the Chinese had the opportunity to lose Google tomorrow, I think they might well rise up, and that’d be “the Google Revolution.” I say that with some hyperbole! I wish that Google would recognize its power and use it for good when it comes to free speech, because it lives by free speech.
You write about the end of scarcity, managing abundance … Is there anything in the book you’d update now that the financial crisis has hit so hard, and is probably getting worse?
I managed to get an insert into the book at the very last minute: the idea that we’re going through more than a financial crisis, we’re going through a fundamental change in the structure of the economy. Google is not the cause of that, but it is part and parcel of that. And one big outcome of this is that it’ll be a long time before companies grow to scale by borrowing capital to make big acquisitions, because they can’t borrow the capital, obviously.
But they’ll still need to grow to scale and critical mass, and the way that they can do that, watching Google’s example, is by building platforms and networks. So I think that the Google economic model may well be copied even more now than it would have been without a financial crisis. And the need to rethink your worldview, and reinvent your business, is only greater now, so the need to follow examples from successful, smart companies like Google is only greater now, as well.
You only mention Chrome, the Google-developed browser, twice. How come? It seems like a pretty big deal to me.
Because I have a Macintosh, and they haven’t made it for the Mac! It’s that simple. I’m jealous and I want to play with it, but you might have read in the beginning of book that I don’t have a Dell anymore.
Apple is successful despite being pretty un-Google-y. Today, because of Steve Jobs’s health, the company may be at a crossroads. Do you think they should take this moment and become Googlier in any way?
Good one. In the book, Rishad Tobaccowala argued that Apple already is Google-y, because of what its brand stands for: it makes us godlike. The Jobs story … I’m fascinated by questions of public-ness and transparency and the end of privacy. And part of what I define as being Google-y, or really more Internet-smart, is being transparent and open, so that you can be found on Google. There’s an ethic behind this transparency that I’ve learned in the blog world. Should Apple have been more transparent about Steve Jobs’s health? Yes, probably. But, health is an issue of privacy. So I don’t know where I come down in the end.
Fred Wilson, on his blog, won’t buy Apple stock right now because he’s mad at Apple for the way it handled this. I understand that from an investment perspective. And in my book, I talk about revealing my own health history and the benefit I’ve gotten out of that, but I’m not the CEO of Apple, and I’m not the god of Apple.
Otherwise, I hope that Apple doesn’t change, because I love Apple products. I have my iPhone, I have my Mac, my whole family is on Apple. What they shouldn’t change is their worldview; they do damn good work.
You write that “Your customers are your ad agency,” and that companies should embrace their online critics before bad word of mouth spreads. So, you have two five-star reviews on Amazon. You also have a two-star review from a guy named Jeff Lippincott . He said your book is “poorly organized and poorly written.” How are you going to be Google-y in your response to Mr. Lippincott?
I can learn lessons from Mr. Lippincott and write my next book better. I can’t re-copy-edit the book now; it’s more about an argument with the ideas. The greatest benefit that I think I could get from people’s reviews on both Amazon and on my blog, where people are often critical of me or disagree with me, is a substantial discussion of the ideas. The chapter on insurance in the book came out of my readers telling me I was wrong when I said that insurance couldn’t be Google-y.
What we have online is kind of a peer review, and a means of collaboration. Nick Carr said in The Atlantic that Google makes us stupid because deep reading yields deep thinking. I’m not going to disagree with him about that. But deep conversation, ongoing conversation, a continuing review of ideas also yields, I think, deep thinking. That’s what I would hope for, and at the end of the book I invite the discussion to continue. I want it to continue, I know people will disagree with me, and that has great value for the readers of that in turn.

The question whether Apple needs critics or not is irrelevant. Apple is criticized far more than Microsoft even though Microsoft has the upper hand with half-baked products and abrasive personalities that shaped it.
Also, the question about Steve’s health is becoming as nauseating as a question about the gay marriage: we wish them both all the best. If, however, someone thinks that Steve is healthier (or unhealthier) than the benchmark acquired by oogling him, then go ahead and adjust your “position”. Sell the stock, burn your Mac, whatever cranks your wheel.
In the environment which is teeming with bullshitters and bankers, Apple is doing something unusual – delivering on their promises. Maybe that should be in the headlines before (or together with) criticism.
By the same token, Microsoft deserves both criticism and kudos for its efforts to unbreak Vista, unheat Xbox and… well, keep the offices humming on Windows.

Microchip expert Mark Papermaster has settled a noncompete lawsuit filed against him by former employer IBM (NYSE: IBM) and is set to join Apple on April 24 as head of device hardware engineering, Apple announced Tuesday.
The terms of the settlement, however, place a potentially heavy burden on Papermaster and, by extension, Apple. Papermaster must check in with IBM if he suspects that any innovations he develops at Apple infringe on confidential or proprietary information he picked up during his years of work at Big Blue.

What’s more, the settlement dictates that IBM, and only IBM, gets to decide if the techniques in question derive from its intellectual property, and its decisions are not subject to appeal — even to the court. IBM’s determination “shall be final and binding and not subject to review in any way,” Karas wrote.
Papermaster must also submit to IBM, on two occasions prior to Oct. 15, a declaration, written under penalty of perjury, that states that he’s not using confidential IBM material in his role at Apple.
IBM and Apple compete in the market for components used in handheld devices such as mobile phones and MP3 players. Papermaster’s position at Apple puts him directly in charge of development efforts for the iPhone and iPod handheld lines.
The unusual settlement comes at a time of uncertainty within Apple’s upper management. CEO Steve Jobs announced earlier this month that he would take a six-month leave of absence in order to attend to his health. Jobs originally said that he was suffering from a hormonal imbalance but stated later that his condition is more complicated than first believed.
Jobs was treated for pancreatic cancer in 2004.
IBM sued Papermaster, who was part of Big Blue’s elite Integration & Values team, for violating a noncompete agreement in October, shortly after he informed the company that he intended to join Apple.

medically speaking in a person who’s had pancreatic cancer in the past, cancer recurrence is the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 10th reason for Jobs’s illness. . . the hormonal imbalance doesn’t really hold much water. . . so I think his cancer is back, he has less than 6 mths to live, and you’re all deluding yourselves if you think otherwise.

I’m still undecided on the Steve Jobs thing. On one hand, yeah he’s the CEO of Apple. However, he’s still a person with a right to privacy, especially regarding health matters. If I had to make a call, I’d probably fall on the side of protecting his right to privacy.
Yes, his death could effect Apple, maybe. But someone has to run things when he’s not there. If the company is structured as a one-man-show… that’s a matter which should be addressed by the investors, rather than focusing on his health. After all, what happens if he gets hit by a bus? That’s not health related, but it’s the same thing- either natural or not, Jobs would still not be running Apple.
Personally, I can’t believe Apple is set up as a one-man-show. Yeah, it makes good press to play like Jobs is some kind of Thomas Edison figure, but the reality has to be pretty far from the truth. A company that size doesn’t run on the ideas of a single person.

เวลา 10.00 น.ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงานว่า ได้มีการประชุมพิจารณาคุณสมบัติผู้ได้รับการแต่งตั้งโยกย้ายหรือประชุมกลั่นกรองตำรวจระดับรอง ผบ.ตร.- ผบก.106 ตำแหน่ง โดยมี รองผบ.ตร.และจเรตำรวจแห่งชาติเข้าร่วมประชุมกลั่นกรองที่สำนักงานผู้บัญชาการตำรวจแห่งชาติ ชั้น 7 โดยใช้เวลาในการประชุมประมาณ 2 ชั่วโมง โดยบรรยากาศภายในห้องประชุมเป็นไปอย่างเคร่งเครียด มีการถกเถียงในตำแหน่งสำคัญ ๆ หลายตำแหน่ง โดยเฉพาะตำแหน่ง รอง ผบ.ตร.ที่พล.ต.อ.พัชรวาท วงษ์สุวรรณ ผบ.ตร.พยายามผลักดันพล.ต.ท.วัชรพล ประสารราชกิจ ผู้ช่วย ผบ.ตร. ขึ้นดำรงตำแหน่งรอง ผบ.ตร. แต่มีรอง ผบ.ตร.หลายคนไม่เห็นด้วยโดยเห็นว่าไม่ถูกต้อง ควรให้ตำแหน่งนี้กับ พล.ต.อ.วิเชียร พจน์โพธิ์ศรี ประจำสำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติสไลด์มานั่งในตำแหน่งนี้แทน เพราะมีคำสั่งอนุก.ตร.อุทธรณ์ให้พล.ต.อ.วิเชียรได้รับการแต่งแต่งเข้าตำแหน่งหลักในโอกาสแรกที่มีการแต่งตั้ง
ต่อมา เวลา 14.00 น.นายสุเทพ เทือกสุบรรณ รองนายกรัฐมนตรีด้านความมั่นคงเดินทางมาเป็นประธานคณะกรรมการข้าราชการตำรวจ(ก.ตร.) เพื่อพิจารณาแต่งตั้งข้าราชการตำรวจ โดยมีรองผบ.ตร. ก.ตร.ผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิเข้าร่วมประชุม
ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงานว่า บรรยากาศในที่ประชุมก.ตร.เป็นไปอย่างเคร่งเครียด มีการถกเถียงกันในตำแหน่ง รองผบ.ตร.กว่า 2 ชั่วโมงก็ยังไม่ได้ข้อสรุป ประธานต้องสั่งพักการประชุมเป็นเวลา 45 นาที จากนั้นจึงเข้าห้องประชุมต่อ โดยได้สั่งพักการแต่งตั้งตำแหน่งรองผบ.ตร.ไว้ก่อน ให้ทำตำแหน่งโยกย้ายในระนาบเดียวกันก่อนเพื่อความรวดเร็ว โดยใช้เวลาประมาณ 10 นาที จึงได้สั่งเลิกกระประชุม โดยนัดประชุมอีกครั้งในวันที่ 13 กุมภาพันธ์ 2552
ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงานว่า ประเด็นที่มีการถกเถียงกันอย่างกว้างขวาง คือ ตำแหน่งรองผบ.ตร. ซึ่งพล.ต.อ.พัชรวาท ได้เสนอชื่อ พล.ต.ท.วัชรพล ประสารราชกิจ ผู้ช่วย ผบ.ตร. แต่ก.ตร.หลายท่านไม่เห็นด้วย โดยเห็นว่าตำแหน่งนี้ผู้ที่เหมาะสมน่าจะเป็น พล.ต.อ.วิเชียร พจน์โพธิ์ศรี ประจำ ตร. เนื่องจากก่อนหน้านี้คณะอนุกรรมการ ก.ตร.อุทธรณ์ ได้มีมติให้แต่งตั้ง พล.ต.อ.วิเชียรเข้าตำแหน่งหลักในโอกาสแรกที่มีการแต่งตั้งข้าราชการตำรวจ แต่ พล.ต.อ.พัชรวาท ไม่ยินยอม โดยได้ให้เหตุผลถึงความเหมาะสมต่าง ๆ จนทำให้เกิดการถกเถียงกันอย่างเคร่งเครียด นอกจากนั้นยังมีปัญหากรณีที่ พล.ต.ท.ชลอ ชูวงษ์ ผู้ช่วยผบ.ตร.อาวุโสอันดับ 1 นำคำสั่งศาลปกครองกลางที่คืนสิทธิ ลำดับอาวุโส ให้เหมือนก่อนที่จะถูก คมช.ย้ายไปเป็นที่ปรึกษาสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี (ระดับ 9) มาแจ้งให้กับก.ตร.ทุกคน และขู่จะฟ้องศาลปกครอง หากมีการแต่งตั้งข้ามอาวุโส ทำให้ก.ตร.บางท่านเกรงจะเกิดปัญหาภายหลัง
นายสุเทพกล่าวภายหลังการประชุมเพียงสั้น ๆ ว่า การประชุมมีวาระแต่งตั้งโยกย้ายข้าราชการตำรวจ แต่ตนจำไม่ได้ เพราะมีจำนวนหลายตำแหน่ง รายละเอียดต่าง ๆให้ไปสอบถาม พล.ต.อ.พัชรวาท วงษ์สุวรรณ ผบ.ตร.
ด้าน พล.ต.อ.พัชรวาทกล่าวว่า การประชุมมีการหยิบยกเหตุผลต่าง ๆ ขึ้นมาอภิปรายในตำแหน่งรองผบ.ตร.แต่ไม่สามารถหาข้อยุติได้มีปัญหาเล็กน้อย เพราะผู้ที่ได้รับการเสนอชื่อในตำแหน่งนี้มีอยู่ด้วยกันหลายคน ยืนยันว่า ปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นไม่ได้เกิดจากตัว พล.ต.ท.ชลอ ชูวงษ์ ผู้ช่วยผบ.ตร. อย่างไรก็ตามคาดว่าสัปดาห์หน้าจะได้ข้อยุติในตำแหน่งนี้ ส่วนการแต่งตั้งใน ศปก.จชต.นั้นได้ทำเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้ว

ขณะเดียวกันเห็นชอบให้ พล.ต.ท.สุวัฒน์ ธำรงศรีสกุล จเรตำรวจ(สบ9)โยกไปเป็นผู้ช่วยผบ.ตร. และเห็นชอบให้ พล.ต.ท.สถาพร ดวงแก้ว ผบช.ภ.5 ขึ้นเป็นจเรตำรวจ(สบ9) ทั้งนี้จะมีผลต่อเมื่อก.ตร.ครั้งต่อไป แต่งตั้งผู้ช่วยผบ.ตร.คนใดคนหนึ่งเป็นรองผบ.ตร. จากนั้นก.ตร.ก็จะมีมติอนุมัติแต่งตั้งโยกย้ายตำแหน่งดังกล่าวอีกครั้ง
ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงานสำหรับตำแหน่ง พล.ต.ท.ไถง นั้นก่อนหน้านี้มีชื่อว่าจะได้ไปนั่งในตำแหน่งผบช.น. แต่เกรงว่าจะทำให้เกิดแรงต้านจากกลุ่มผู้ชุมนุมเสื้อแดง อีกทั้ง พล.ต.ท.ไถง ไม่เคยทำงานในนครบาลมาก่อน จึงให้ไปนังในตำแหน่งผบช.ก.แทน

The company would not lose its vision thing and still be turning out wow gee services, products and stuff, and still turn a nice chunk of profit. 2.)Meanwhile, Woz, not satisfied being new chief science officer for another fringe company, is a contestant on “Dancing With The Stars”. It’d be a nice touch if Jobs appeared in the audience a couple of times. I wouldn’t count Woz out, he’d last to semi-finals. Personally, I’d thought Richard Stallman would be a shoo-in for this, but apparently, nobody outside of geek circles knows who the fuck he is, but then geeks and Asperger fans are too busy watching this on Monday nights.
3.) Oh yeah, one more thing … when did the comments start going Cyrillic? Didn’t we win the Cold War? It’s the Latin alphanumeric system here, comrade, don’t make me resurrect the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth …

Woz is showing some personal growth, at least he is not running the Wheels of Zeus (his previous company, also known as, erm, WoZ).
I don’t know what’s happening. Bill is letting mosquitos out on stage, Woz is doing storage (storage!!!) and Steve is taking time off.
