All I can say is this video totally captures my experience with the 3G iPhone. Except most of the time I can’t even get onto a 3G network at all.

Everyone’s mileage varies depending on exact location. Try Verizon EVDO in the midwest and you’ll only get it in the major metros and more than likely “won’t get any” data connect of any speed once outside those majors.
Sorry but I have an iPhone 3G in Montreal and all of these features work as just as fast for me as the commercial claims that they do.

I saw an ad for a convertible. A guy drove his convertible to the beach and suddenly get surrounded by hot bikini-clad girls. I bought the convertible. I drove to the beach. No hot bikini-clad girls came over. While I was on the beach, a cop gave me a ticket.

I’m posting from Europe – it’s just north of Canada – and from over here so many Europeans who have used their phones in the US can’t believe how bad the US cell networks are compared to ours.

@SImon – get your facts straight… The GSM networks in the US suck, the CDMA networks are much, much better… Just look at JD Powers or Consumer Reports… Verizon & Alltel (soon to be one) rock!
Cell phone netwrks in Europe suck too. I used to be an ex-pat in London and tried both Vodafone & Orange… Both sucked… VOdafone cell signal would go to zero in central London (while in the middle of a call!)… When I called tech support, they would say that the base station crashed and they were working to reboot it! Can’t remember hat happening in NYC w/ Verizon….
I remember not getting any signals in tunnels around London as well as elsewhere in Europe… Gee, the tunnels going into Manhattan, that are about 1.6 MILES LONG have had coverage for YEARS!!!!!
Europe has NO wireless technology competition due to European industrial policy that blocked out anything Nokia or Ericsson, et al did not make… Just look at the ETSI voting process n technology standards… a total sham!
This situation explains your outrageous roaming rates, outrageous calling party pays rates, etc… b/c the carriers all have the same cost structure & the same suppliers…

in pdx-rose city, where i hail from, at&t coverage is pretty durn good throughout. even 3G. except… a little 10 block radius patch right around, you guessed it, where i live. but i have wifi here, so i could care less.
no, even with the 2.1 software patch, it does not zip through the ny times or google maps like on the tv. and as others have pointed out, heidi klum doesn’t come to my living room live & personal to do a strip tease either. but the iPhone performance is good enough for me. as for ms. klum, she’s still not returning my calls. sigh.
more importantly, dan-o, what say you about this little chestnut about apple (somewhat) going back to in-home activations? that to me is a real story worth noting.
