CNET reports that Borg marketeers have come up with yet another incredibly stupid trick sly strategy for getting people to use Vista. They find people who say they hate Vista and lure them into a demo of a “new operating system” which they call “Mojave.” The saps start raving about how great Mojave is. The Borg videotapes them raving. Then the Borgtards pull away the curtain (or something) and show the dupes that they’ve actually been using Vista.
Sound familiar? See this old advertisement:
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HGKJHpQkfI&hl=en&fs=1]
As CNET reporter Ina Fried points out, the demo isn’t entirely fair, since, “To be sure, the focus groups didn’t have to install Vista or hook it up to their existing home network.”
New slogan for Vista: “Works great in a focus group demo room when installed and operated by Microsoft employees in a controlled hardware environment.”
Also, I’m no marketing guru, but it seems to me that those Folgers ads only made Folgers seem even cheesier. Microsoft can spend as much money as it wants on Vista ads. They’ll just be digging a deeper hole for themselves.

its a vistaste test! good job ms marketards.
Well the Mohave has a nice vista when viewing it from afar, but when you get get close to it is just sand, rock, and cactus.
The best part of waking up is Vista in your cup!
They’re soaking in at all right.
Surprise! You’re using Vista while eating a Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s burger and drinking Folger’s coffee.
Welcome to the target demographic. Your parents must be proud.
I thought of that same campaign as well, and think my blog post hit before this one so nobody accuse me of stealing! Besides, don’t forget he recent Pizza Hut pasta ads as well.
What we’ve learned here is that, apparently, if you don’t bother with Vista beyond running it for a few minutes in a controlled environment, it rocks!
I suppose that some will think such a test proves something. But as someone else pointed out, all the problems have been removed. It’s something like the Folgers ad: give ‘em something to eat, give ‘em some alcohol, and they’ll roll over like puppies.

“Works great in a focus group demo room when installed and operated by Microsoft employees in a controlled hardware environment.”
You know what that sounds like, don’t you? That’s right. Apple Macs and MacBooks. Apple doesn’t get as much shit because people who buy Macs have their OS preinstalled, and if Macs aren’t “controlled hardware environment” then I don’t know what is.
Remember when 10.5 came out? A LOT of people had trouble upgrading.
Peace.
The amount of money they’re willing to burn in this marketing strategy is a good measure of how inept their leaders have become.
A quick FYI to MS – a turd stank just as bad back when everyone thought the world was flat.
MS business model ftw!
Just checking my login
Or, maybe this just disproves the entire bullshit behind the Microsoft hatetard’s meme that somehow Vista is “broken”.
Vista is pretty good, and definitely far better than the “conventional wisdom” would have people think. I’ve been supporting Windows since Win95, and each WinNT based version has been better than the last… and that includes Vista (I wasn’t a big fan of the win32 OS’s after Win95).
There hasn’t been a single Vista machine I’ve worked on where the problem with it was Vista. Common problems are 3rd party drivers (especially when its from crappy companies like Creative), many times it’s bad hardware.
IMO, one of the biggest reasons Apple seems so good is because they control their hardware platform with an iron fist. So you don’t get Apple machines which use bottom tier crap parts like you do with a Gateway or HP or whatever. That’s why every comparison between an Apple and a PC, they use some kind of bottom-tier junk, rather than going with a quality machine like a Dell. If you spend the exact same amount of money on an Apple or a PC, the PC will win every time… but obviously you can’t be viewed as an elite hipster unless you are seen with an Apple logo on everything you carry.
Personally, seeing MS confront these idiots head on is exactly the kind of thing they need to do. Bullshit doesn’t go away all by itself. If it did, everyone would think GWB was a competent president.
OK JSG, so what hardware is it safe to use Vista on? Why can’t MS work with HP, seeing as HP is a rather big seller of PCs running Windows, to iron out these problems? Gateway is owned by Dell. Dell and HP are the big 2 in PC sales, so why can’t MS and these 2 work together? Is MS completely blameless? I guess Macs run Vista pretty well, odd that the giant MS can’t persuade hardware companies which specialise in platforms for Vista to do a better job, or at least an equal job as computers designed to run Mac OS X.
I guess selling a lot of PCs running Vista with only 1 GB or RAM and sales people who for who knows what reason don’t understand the reasons why more than 1 GB or RAM is good for just about any reason, causes problems in using Vista. But, no one’s stopping MS from manufacturing PCs designed to optimise the performance of Windows, so why don’t they do it? No one’s stopping MS from circulating advice to PC purchasers about the advantages of having more than the bare minimum of RAM necessary to run the OS, so why don’t they?
I was at a conference on a university campus recently and an IT guy was helping me set up Airport on my MacBook to log into the guest WiFi network. He had some instructions on how to do it for Tiger, but not Leopard. He still managed to do it. Seeing this lack of knowledge of Leopard, I asked why IT administrators don’t like Mac. The answer was, it works too well and too easily so it doesn’t give them enough work. Not the only IT pro I’ve heard that kind of comment from either.
Even in the best conditions, Vista will run more slowly than the Mac OS because of the need to run anti-virus and anti-spyware software. I guess you’ll claim that the lack of anti-Mac viruses is due to a small market share, but given the sky rocketing sales to an up market sector, that sort of reasoning is wearing very thin. Shouldn’t we see some proper viruses by now;? We’ve just had a few trojans easily avoided by anyone who who either avoids zip files from previously unknown sources or who checks the source of a download before entering a password into the computer, and certainly anyone who takes both those rather simple precautions? Maybe the OS just happens to be highly secure.
I could give some relatively subjective reasons for preferring OS X to Vista, but the above rather objective reasons will do for now. Funny that Mac OS X is gaining in market share, and even in the business sector if slowly, if Vista is so great. Claiming that people abandon Windows for the Mac OS in these numbers purely because of FUD from the Mac community is a pretty radical claim.
If you go here, we see where Dilbert decided not to attack Vista as the influence of a comic strip is such, it may potentially wreck the economy and kill The Third World.
That’s total BS. Decaf instant Folgers sucks.
So…the aim of the Mojave (goddamn them for screwing up a nice place with a shitty connotation) project is to join Folgers in the ranks of mediocre products foisted on discriminating consumers?
I am currently having my old hard drive wiped due to a malware infestation that destroyed it. The malware is called Vista, and the techie who’s going to do the job says his business has done hundreds of Vista wipes and installs of some other OS, sometimes with brand new computers where the folks wanted the hardware but not Vista.
At least one friend also encountered the “computer won’t shut off unless I unplug it” experience (mine used to go down daily by the end), but replaced Vista before it completely hosed his machine. That’s my main regret, now — that I didn’t get this done earlier.
The machine I am currently using runs Windows XP with just 256MB RAM. The Vista machine ran slower and was more unreliable with a dual-core processor and 1 GB RAM. Any questions?
You can dress up a pig in a skirt, put false eyelashes and lipstick on it, and it’s still just a glorified pig (and probably a lot more uncomfortable, too!)
“IMO, one of the biggest reasons Apple seems so good is because they control their hardware platform with an iron fist. So you don’t get Apple machines which use bottom tier crap parts like you do with a Gateway or HP or whatever.”
Exactly.
I’ve been using macs, at home, since late ’84.
In parallel, I’ve been using WinTel computers at my various jobs – DOS, WIN3.1, WinNT, Win2k Pro, and WinXP Pro [my current employer doesn't see any reason to upgrade to Vista, or just doesn't want spend the money when 2k & XP are meeting our needs]
We’re supposedly some kind of cult because we were willing to pay more for higher-quality hardware, and a better OS – especially back in the DOS/Win3.1 years ~shudders~
I could probably use Vista or Leopard at home – and be happy – but the funny thing is my Core 2 Duo-based iMac -can- dual-boot into Windows… if I felt the need to buy a copy of Vista or XP at retail. I just haven’t felt the need to run Windows at home.
anyway…
I’ve never used Vista, but two relatives bought new machines in 2007 and -hated- how many things they had to do differently, after using XP for years… so it makes me wonder what they would think if someone had put them through such a “blind taste test” of Vista.
Came to this site from Ars Technica – was surprised to see you using the term “Borg” to refer to Microsoft – isn’t that owned by Viacom?
“was surprised to see you using the term “Borg” to refer to Microsoft – isn’t that owned by Viacom?”
Hey Rick, quit being a dork.
I resent when people suggest I’m all washed up and have no future. I really resent it. I am the person who almost made a living mocking one of the greatest business leaders of this generation. That makes me a somebody, not a nobody.
There is anecdotal evidence that service pack three for Windows XP Pro for enterprise vendors screws with the Registry to the point where all pass words for admin are thrown out. Either do a complete wipe and fresh install or update to Vista. If this is not freetard/XP fan bullshit, I smell class action lawsuit.
Meanwhile, me and my fair lady are heading to Siberia to watch the solar eclipse next week. At least they have good internet in Novobezerkistan, at least, so I’m told.
Computerworld has labelled Vista New Coke. Quick, someone create a Steve Ballmer animation as Max Headroom touting Vista!
No matter what they do, Vista = Viasta!!!
I’ve been through the desert on an OS with two name
It’d feel better to be out in the rain
In the Mac, you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no Vista for to give you no pain
Laa laa laaa la la la, la la laa, la la.
“Quick, someone create a Steve Ballmer animation as Max Headroom touting Vista!”
Good one.
I’d forgotten about Max…
Almost makes me feel as old as last week, when a younger co-worker mentioned going to see the “Get Smart” movie – without realizing it was based on an old TV show.
